What sports/physical activities are good for someone with Cystic Fibrosis?

I want to get my daughter involved in some good sports/physical activities. She’s only 3 years old. She has Cystic Fibrosis. We live in New York and walk a lot, she gets out of breath often when we go for walks and walk up hills. But the doctors say its good for her to have to work her lungs. What are the best Sports and other physical activities I should get her involved in?

Regular exercise improves the Health of people who have cystic fibrosis. Exercise helps loosen mucus, encourages coughing, improves oxygen flow, and makes you feel better. Upper body exercises, such as swimming or rowing, increase the strength and endurance of the muscles that are used for breathing.

After talking to your doctor about how much exercise is good for your child, encourage your child to participate in sports and recreational activities. Team sports are great ways for your child to stay fit and to interact with other children. Talk to the coach or supervisor about your child’s abilities and the important role of physical activity in the treatment of cystic fibrosis.

Some people who have cystic fibrosis may not be strong enough to participate in certain activities. Your doctor can recommend the right amount and type of exercise for you. Or, you may work with a physical therapist to develop your own exercise routine.

How does a science technician work safely in the Lab?

How does a science technician work safely in the Lab?
What precautions are in place to make the Lab. a safe working environment for the science technician?
What are the various methods of monitoring that the safety precautions put in place are effective?
What are the legal regulations designed to protect the Science technicians?

Most precautions in the lab are either engineering solutions (well-designed ventilation fume hoods), or a matter of wearing appropriate personal protective equipment ("PPE"). The latter being things like appropriate gloves (latex, rubber, nitrile, etc), safety glasses/goggles, lab coats, potentially dust masks or air respirators. These are the most common safety precautions in place for chemistry labs in industry and academia.

I want to learn photography, which camera should i start out with?

Okay, so i’m only in high school, but i’m trying to figure out what i want to do with my life. Photography has always been something i love, but i’m just now getting into it. So my question is, what’s the best camera to start out with if you are really interested in Photography?

Probably an entry level dslr. They can be a little overwhelming if you have little or no experience in photography, but the learning curve is steep so you’ll pick it up quick. With the full manual controls, you’ll be able to adjust the white balance, shutter speed, aperture, focus, etc. and see exactly how everything works in relation to each other. Also, you’ll eventually learn about using different kinds of lenses.

Although dslrs can be expensive (the lenses are the most expensive part), entry level dslrs are much cheaper than they use to be. Some to look at the Nikon D series (D40, D60), Canon Rebel (XTi), Olympus E series (E420, E510). Maybe look into Pentax or Sony as well. Look for a package that comes with a "kit" lens. Although the lens won’t be professional quality, it will be cheaper and you’ll be able to use it to learn with. After you learn a bit and figure out some stuff, you can start looking at better, more expensive lenses.

Stay away from compacts or point&shoots, they automate too much of the photography process. However, if that’s all you can get your hands on, you can still learn something from it. Use as many manual functions as you can, and take lots and lots of photos to practice things like framing a scene, light sources, etc. After all, a good photographer can take a good picture with a bad camera, but a bad photographer can’t do anything even with a good camera.

How can I get web hosting from my internet provider?

I have Qwest internet, and I want to know if there is a way that I can get web hosting from them. Otherwise, does anyone know of any sites that are relatively inexpensive and effective for web Hosting?

yahoo geocities is free (ads will be shown on your finished page)

if you’re looking to pay… (no ads) 1&1 has really good prices for hosting & domains

godaddy claims to have good prices but I went with 1&1 for the hosting and domain deal.

How much RMS watts of a home theatre is enough for a 18 x 14 Room?

I am looking for a Home theatre for my room (Specially for listening to music). Please tell how many RMS are enough for this sized room. Also I am looking forward to Sony Home Theatre. How does that delivers.
Secondly if I have a DVD player with a build-in amp. can I attach an additional amplifier to it for a better sound quality?
The budget is around 15K.

what you’re asking is like asking what color cup would hold 8 ozs….
When purchasing an audio system, first determine your budget. Then devote between 75 – 90 percent of that to the speakers. The rest to the source.
And no you can not attach an amp to an amp.

What is the lifespan of the average home?

I live in a 1 1/2 storey home built in 1922. I have totally updated the home, (wiring, plumbing etc.). There has been some settling mainly on the second floor, not enough to prevent doors from closing. I purchased the home in 1999. I have not noticed any new settling since. I am wondering how long a lifespan a home built in 1922 has. I like my home but it is 84 years old. I will be entering retirement when this house turns 100. I maintain this home accordingly but I wonder if it is wise to have a 100 year old retirement home. I would appreciate some comments on my delima. Thank you.

As long as you have updated everything that needs to be, you should be safe.

I have installed new furnaces in Homes that are well over 100 years old, and house looked great after they updated everything.

Working in many different aged homes, I’ve noticed back in the day they built houses to stand forever, now days they put the houses up as fast as they can and move on to the next one.

How do I deduct health insurance premiums from my taxes when I am self-employed?

We are losing my wife’s health insurance and are going to be taking out a private Health Insurance policy. I am self-employed and think I can deduct the premiums from my taxable income.

Does anyone know if that is the case? I would appreciate anyone who could point me in the right direction.

If you establish the policy in the name of the Business (or your name if a sole proprietor), then you can deduct the premiums on the front of the 1040, line 29.

What are some recommended books for newbies to gardening?

Especially helpful if they’re about small spaces, herbs, and organic gardening. I have an apartment and I’d like to have a small organic herb and flower garden on my deck, but I’m not sure where to start. Thanks!

Mel Bartholomew’s "square foot Gardening" method is really inspiring, and can teach you to fit a lot of plants into a small space. (Here’s the site; there’s also a book: http://www.squarefootgardening.com/)

For nuts and bolts kind of gardening, I like Barbara Damrosch’s Garden Primer (from amazon: http://www.amazon.com/Garden-Primer-Barbara-Damrosch/dp/0894803166).

If you are into preserving Foods at all, I really like Mike and Nancy Bubel’s books; the root cellar book has a lot of info about planning your garden, too. They also have one on seed-starting. (From amazon: http://www.amazon.com/Root-Cellaring-Natural-Storage-Vegetables/dp/0882667033/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1231314436&sr=1-1 also http://www.amazon.com/New-Seed-Starters-Handbook/dp/0878577521/ref=sr_1_7?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1231314436&sr=1-7)

Good luck, and have fun!

What are the best furniture stores in the Houston, Texas area?

I have researched the various furniture stores in the Houston, Texas area and Rooms To Go and Ashley Furniture had furniture I liked for prices I could afford. However, even though BBB gives the stores fairly good ratings, consumer reviews are not good. The BBB is not reporting any complaints against Star Furniture but the store prices are a little beyond my budget as is the case with Gallery. Any suggestions would be a great help?

We found The Room Store to be pretty good. We bought a table elsewhere and then found it for WAY less at The Room Store, so we bought our leather couches there.
