How does reducing Food waste help the environment now and in the future?

Explain how reducing food waste is a responsibility.
Reflect upon whether or not it is our right to waste food in the UK.

The less food wasted, the less food needs to be produced; thus saving the environment which can be left in its pristine state.
Less food production also saves on labour, processing, cartage, storage etc. All of these activities impinge on the environment

Hi,

I have three 4-year-old cats. We have always fed them good quality Food with no by-products, corn, or wheat ingredients. Even on this high quality food, they still throw up. It’s not just hairballs they are throwing up it is actual chunks of partially digested food. We recently tried giving them food with no chicken in it whatsoever. They stopped throwing up with this new food, but they are not eating enough; they don’t seem to like it at all. What would you suggest I do? Has anyone had this problem?

It would be very odd, but they all may be allergic to the foods they are being fed, or they may all have blockages – both of wouldn’t make much sense.

I would get them all checked for Hyperthyroid on top of a regular CBC.

The treatment for Hyperthyroid is the Methimazole which can be inserted into a "Greenies ‘Pill Pocket’" (My cat with Hyperthyroid prefers the chicken flavored and not the salmon). You can even split the Pill Pocket (like I do with my girl), put the pill inside, surround it with the pill pocket and they will think it’s a treat!

If not, if they do not like it, you will need to pill them the old Fashioned way, like I do with my Seizure girl.

Please feel free to write me once you have a diagnosis! )

Throwing up often causes severe dehydration – do the pinch test, gently pick up the skin on the BACK (not neck) of each of your cats, then drop – if it takes more than 1.5 seconds to drop back down, your cats are dehydrated and need supplemental Sub-Q (subcutaneous "under-the-skin") fluids. If the skins just stands up, they need to go to emergency now.

I’m just throwing all this out there to give different avenues . . . bu the Vet is a definite, getting the bloodwork and, my gut tells me by my own hyperthyroid cat, that there may be some hyperthyroid going on. (Cheapest place to get it is at Costco, ask your Vet for a ‘script if this happens to be the diagnosis).

p.s. Purina one, when I was at my poorest, I mixed in with the higher brand, Innova to make it last longer – 1/2 of my cats threw up and I added the Purina One very slowly, over the period of a month. That was it, I’m keeping them on the high quality food with no grain at all. They’ve now been switched to "Taste of the Wild" which has not one grain and is made with purified water and a lot of meat as the first ingredients.

They all love it! No throw-up issues at all!

Most food is polluted and the organic food is too expensive to us . Can we continue to buy the vegetables etc from the market and consume them as we have no alternative it seems?

Hmm, you either pay for the food now or you pay later with health problems and far more expensive medical expenses. Considering that most people in the USA spend far more on gadgets and services they do not need to exists like cable TV, Video games, expensive cars, make up, designer clothing etc., etc., than they do on food perhaps Organic food is not all that expensive. it really comes down to priorities. if you value Health and good eating above other things than the food is not expensive. if you must have the other luxuries in life than Food becomes unimportant, a mere fuel source that can come from anywhere.

Grow a garden, buy in season in bulk direct from the farmers, can/freeze/dry the bounty in season to be eaten out of season. hard work? yes, Secure clean Food? yes. Cheap? Yes!

How does that work and what is the difference? Also can you get cash back from a food stamp card?

I looked at your question, hoping to see what an answer to this would be. But, my guess is that ones that qualify for a program for both cash and Food stamps would have it put all on the same card. I hope you get your answer for more information. I waited until more time for you to get your answer, before I tried to give an answer. I hope you get an answer. I am curious, also.

Are you batter dipping or is this prebreaded/battered stuff?
When putting in freshly battered/breaded food, don’t just drop it in.
I hold the piece, hold the top and let most of it go into the oil until the coating starts to cook, that makes it float a little & hardens most of the coating so it doesn’t stick.

I am pretty satisfied with commercial dog food and I have no problem sticking with it, but I would just like to know how to make nutritional homemade dog Food. My dogs are a golden retriever, beagle, and dachshund if that information is needed. I would like advice also, like what supplements to put in the food, and the right portions, and a professional website would be the best. I don’t really want just Homemade dog food that isn’t any better than commercial dog food. Please help out. Thanks.

Do not feed your dog bones, especially cooked bones. Fragments can become lodged in the digestive tract. Canines in the wild who eat bones have the benefit of consuming hair and hide too, which have been found to ‘pad’ the bone fragments and aid in their passing. Other foods to avoid that are dangerous for dogs are chocolate, avocados, mushrooms, macadamia nuts, grapes, raisins, onions, and garlic.

Try one of these easy dog food recipes and watch your pup smile.

My cat is 1 year old, he’s a male and he weighs 12.2 lbs. He looks slightly overweight because he has a gut that hangs down around his waist. I want him to lose weight but dont know what portions of food to feed him. Currently I feed him a half a can of wet food and 1/2 cup of dry food every day, broken up into 4 meals. Am I overfeeding him? How much should I be feeding him?
The size can I give him is 5.5 oz.

There is NO such thing as dry "diet" food for cats. Dry foods are filled with carbs that make your cat fat. You can’t make a dry food without carbs, so there are no dry diet foods.

The proper amount to feed per cat/per day should be about 5.5 ounces of wet (high quality grain free canned or Raw Meat/Bones/Organ) food.

The calories in that amount of Food are sufficient for most "normal" sized cats. Of course a highly energetic cat will need more food to keep it Healthy, and a lazy cat will need less food to keep it from getting obese. But 5.5 ounces of wet food per day is a good place to start.

I used to give him a can of wet food every other day and about a half cup of dry food daily, but the wet food gave him diarrhea, so I don’t give him that anymore. He is at a healthy weight of about 8 pounds (he’s almost a year old), and I don’t want him to get fat, but he is always begging for food.
Easy for you to say diarehha isn’t a big deal. You don’t have to clean it off your floor and the poor cats feet after it happens. I need real answers. Not judgements.

None Diarrhea doesn’t compared to blockages, diabetes, kidney disease
Get some acidoupholous from a Health food store and sprinkle some on the food each day. You need to feed proper food for the species

Nutrition since there are so many bad things out there is very important to your cat’s health
Contrary to what you may have heard; dry Foods are not a great thing to feed a cat.
Please read the label on what you are feeding? What are the ingredients? Do you know what they mean? Is the first ingredient a muscle meat like chicken or meal or other things?

Dry foods are the number 1 cause of diabetes in cats as well as being a huge contributing factor to kidney disease, obesity, crystals, u.t.i’s and a host of other problems. Male cats are especially prone to blockages
from dry food. Food allergies are very common when feeding dry foods. Rashes, scabs behind the tail and on the chin are all symptoms The problems associated with Dry food is that they are loaded with grains and carbohydrates which many cats (carnivores) cannot process. ( Have a fat cat?)
Also, Most of the moisture a cat needs is suppose to be in the food but in Dry, 95% of it is zapped out of dry foods in the processing. Another thing, most use horrible ingredients and don’t use a muscle meat as the primary ingredient and use vegetable based protein versus animal. Not good for an animal that has to eat meat to survive.

http://www.catinfo.org/#My_Cat_is_Doing_Just_Fine_on_Dry_Food

You want to pick a canned food w/o gravy (gravy=carbs) that uses a muscle meat as the first ingredient and doesn’t have corn at least in the first 3 ingredients if at all.
THE BEST CAT FOODS CONTAIN NO GRAINS NO BYPRODUCTS
Cats are meat eaters not cereal or rice eaters
Fancy feast is a middle grade food with 9lives, friskies whiskas lower grade canned and wellness and merrick upper grade human quality foods. I would rather feed a middle grade canned food then the top of the line dry food.
Also, dry food is not proven to be better for teeth. Does a hard pretzel clean your teeth or do pieces of it get stuck? http://www.felinefuture.com/nutrition/bpo_ch4a.php

Please read about cat nutrition.

Vetinarian diets The reason your vet thinks so highly of the pet food they sell probably has more to do with money than nutrition. In vet school, the only classes offered on nutrition usually last a few weeks, and are taught by representatives from the pet food companies. Vet students may also receive free food for their own dogs and cats at home. They could get an Iams notebook, a Purina purse and some free pizza. http://iml.jou.ufl.edu/projects/Spring04/Perhach/PetFood/Vets.htm
