I live in MN and am interested in possibly Hosting an exchange student. Where can I go to get information? Does it cost money – does the student have money available to them while they are here?

How wonderful that you are considering opening your Home to someone! I am a 5-time host mom and volunteer with Youth For Understanding (YFU). I will not pretend that YFU is the only good exchange program around, but we have had a very good experience with it. The first student we hosted was with another program (that no longer exists) and we learned a few things during that time. We then moved out of State (twice) and so had a decade gap in hosting. After we got into the position to host again, we called our school to see if they had any recommendations – they didn’t – and then did a little research. We started by calling agencies listed with the Council for Standards on International Educational Travel (csiet.org). They routinely audit programs for quality. One of the most important parts of an exchange organization is their local representative. As we live in Wyoming, many did not have one (nor seemed to care that one was needed). In the end, we ended up with YFU. I would highly recommend them. Yes, I am a volunteer for them, but I only became a volunteer after we’d hosted for 3 years. My time is very precious to me and so I won’t waste it on things I don’t feel passionately about. (Full disclosure: in the little over 1 year that I’ve been a volunteer, I’ve gotten a $15 gift card to a local restaurant, a YFU Tshirt, and a YFU sweatshirt. So I have gotten things of financial value, but I am certainly not paid.)

Financially speaking, all the host families are required to provide are room (a bed to sleep in (either in a personal room or a shared room with a host sibling of the same sex), a place to put some personal belongings (clothes…), and (of course) access to a bathroom (can be shared)) and board (3 meals a day (our kids are accustomed to making their own breakfast, getting cash in the amount of slightly more than school lunch, and then eating whatever my husband and I eat for supper), basic utilities (hot water, electricity)). The student must also have a way to get to school – if you are reasonably close to school, they can walk, bicycle, rollerblade, whatever. If you’re not, they can ride the school bus, ride with you on your way to work (what our kids do – the school is literally on my way), ride with friends, etc. Many kids in our region take the school bus until they find friends to ride with. The ‘rule of thumb’ when deciding who pays for what is: if it’s a family activity, the family pays (for example, if the family decide to go to a movie, they pay); if it’s something the student wants to do, the student pays (examples: if the student wants a new pair of jeans, if the student wants a haircut, if the student needs soccer shoes in order to join the school team, etc.).

I have recorded some covers (karaoke style) that I would like to be hosted so that they can be shared online without having to be downloaded by the listener. The material (i.e. music and words) are copyrighted by other parties, but it is my voice. But, this prevents sites like supload from Hosting them. First of all when it comes to hosting, many of these hosting companies just complete suck! They are either too expensive or they have unnacceptable levels of uptime. I can’t have my site down during the day, but I can’t afford right now to pay a lot for Hosting. Who is the best cheap web host?

There’s nothing that bugs me more than a web hosting company that costs more and gives you less. You would think in this modern age that web hosting companies know how important uptime and customer services while keeping costs low enough for the little guy. A search across the web returns reviews for the best cheap affordable web hosting services available and 99% uptime with excellent customer service certainly seems achievable. I would like to create a vBulletin forum, but I need to have my own server. I can either use my own server, or use a server-hosting website.

What is the best website to use, (Cheap, Good Connection, Easy to understand etc) to host a server for a vBulletin forum?

I know you have requested a server, but let me just confirm you definitely don’t want a shared hosting package.

Shared Hosting is much more efficient on the wallet, and as the server is fully managed with a shared hosting account, you can concentrate on running your forum than managing the server at the same time.

If you are just starting out with your forum, i’d recommend shared hosting as it is cheap, and if you choose the right web host, they will upgrade your website with your needs.

If you do want a dedicated server on the other hand, they can cost hundreds of dollars a year based on the specification, and any less just means they are not reliable, and will probably leave your forum with downtime.

So to summarise, in my experience the best shared hosting provider definitely has to be www.belira.com (cheapest option – best quality & up time though) as they have great up time (they are never down) and for dedicated servers, i’d probably go to www.hostgator.com (expensive option – and harder work)

What’s the difference between Linux hosting and Microsoft hosting?

I’m starting a website with 1&1 and their hosting plans have either Linux hosting or Microsoft Hosting. Does it matter what OS I’m using or is this how the server runs? What are the differences?

Differences will arise when it comes to applications that you’re going to use on the server to support your web site.

If you plan to rely on open-source PHP or Perl-based systems, go with Linux. Also, if you plan to send e-mails from your scripts, it is much easier to do that from Unix too.

In general, unless you have some Windows-specific application or technology that is going to support your web site, there are really no good reasons not to prefer Linux.

Linux is much more reliable and secure than Windows.

Hosting a brunch, what should I make?

I’m Hosting a brunch this Saturday and it has totally taken a back seat to my other priorities the last week or two– now I really need to focus on it and figure out what to make for it!
I’d like to stay away from eggs and dairy for the most part, but recipes with a little dairy is ok.

Hey Carly…this is good.

Mix 1 stick of butter with 1 block of cream cheese (soften those in the microwave)
Cut up a large cooked chicken breast, add some salt & pepper to taste
Roll it up in crossaints and bake in the oven on 350 for about 20 minutes.
