I can answer about the recovery chutes. The Cirrus which has them factory installed as a parachute bag attached to the airframe which is attached to a rocket which deploys it. I am not sure of the exact weight but it looks like the whole system woudl weigh less than 100 pounds. The parachute itself is very large (55 foot diameter). There is a limitation on deploying the chute which is 133 knots. The test showed that the aircraft was recovered from a spin in about 900 feet, and recovered from straight and level flight within about 500 feet. You find the answer to "where" a word comes from in its etymology. Large expensive dictionaries will give you the best ones.

Demean means to "lower in dignity," c.1600, perhaps from de- "down" + mean (adj.) and modeled on debase. Indistinguishable in some uses from obsolete demean (see demeanor) which influenced it and may be its true source. Related: Demeaned; demeaning."

You can look up any word there–it is nothing but etymologies.

The Greeks dismissed all other cultures as inferior barbarians, even the word "barbarian" originally just meant "unable to speak Greek", so they ignored and refused to keep any material other than their own. This meant that all the great learning prior to their own culture was lost. It wasn't that earlier cultures didn't ask how, that is the nature of scientific research and many of the earlier cultures had a higher level of understanding of the natural world than the Greeks ever achieved, it is that the African and Middle Eastern knowledge was lost due to Western European ethnocentrism.

Some plays are successful and others are unsuccessful ("flops"). However, there is no consistency and if you drew a graph it would show a pattern of peaks and depressions: one week a success, the next week a failure.

The Congressional Budget Office has released a new study showing that federal-government employees receive significantly higher compensation than private-sector workers with the same levels of education and experience. The CBO report confirms many of the findings of a 2011 study I wrote with Jason Richwine of the Heritage Foundation and helps rebut union claims that federal workers are underpaid.

CBO found that federal employees’ average salaries are about 2 percent higher than those for similar private-sector employees and their benefits exceed by 48 percent private-sector levels, putting total average federal compensation at 16 percent above private-sector levels. With federal-employee compensation totaling $200 billion per year, a 16 percent pay premium is big money — almost $390 billion over ten years.

You'll notice that in those to examples the word "how" introduces a noun clause that is following a verb related to communication:

He told me how…
I asked him how…
We argued about how…
They explained how…

However, you've got to make sure there is a subject and a verb after "how." Examples:
(a) …how I feel.
(b) …how I solved the problem.
(c) …how I knew.
(d) …how it works.

If you put an infinitive with it, it's a phrase, not a clause. Examples;

He told me how to change a tire.
He asked me how to write an essay.
He didn't know how to explain everything to his [...]

Aircraft registration numbers generally follow the pattern of radio callsigns (perhaps because the radio is where they have to identify themselves). Back around 1927 the International Telecomunications Union (ITU) agreed on a set of prefixes to identify radio stations in each contry. Canada actually has more than just C. For example, many amateur radio callsigns in Canada start with VE or VA. Same in the US, where callsigns can also start with A, K, or W in addition to N.

The story is that the US was represented at the time by the army and the navy. They chose A for Army and N for Navy. The civilian callsigns were formed by adding a Morse Code "dash" to the end of A (di-dah [...]
