I am moving and will have roommates. I am bringing my two year old cat. They do not want him to go on the furniture. He is used to going onto the furniture at my apartment that I am moving out of. Is there a spray or something I could use on the furniture that will not harm the Furniture (from suede type couches to wooden things)? I don’t have the heart to spray him with water as he is very skittish. Thanks!
I trained all three of my cats not jump on counters or furniture by using double sided tape for a couple of weeks, and it works and does not hurt them in any way, they don’t like the stickeyness of the tape and then jump down, I have also used a spray bottle with water and this works too. I also put the double-sided tape on my couch corners just to keep it protected but it also deters them from using their claws to tear it up.
I think you need to find new roomates, whats wrong with them anyway. Prissy little punks. You really can not train a cat to do much of anything, they do what they want, when they want.

Cats don’t work around us, we work around them. You will have to remind your new roommates of this, and remind them to please be patient and gentle with him, since he is an animal. Since your cat is young, he will be very active, but I think the best thing would be to get a "training" spray. I have one I got from Wal*art (or Targ*t), and it works, but I have to keep re-applying it every few days. It has eucalyptus and citrus oil, so it isnt harmful to kitties and will deter him, but since it has a teeny amount of oil, over time suede furniture may show dark spots/oil stains. It is only around $4 fm what I remember. You can also make your own in a spray bottle, that will have little to no oil, like using a little crushed red pepper, or lemon rinds, and probably just a pinch of each will do in a 8+ oz spray bottle.
Cats really can be trained to verbal cues; I know I hate spraying mine with water, but each time I do, i say "NO!" loud, and she has begun to associate it with being sprayed w/ water. She really has made progress, and is almost 100% with our training of the command "sit" using Pounce treats. (The SECOND her behind hits the floor, she gets the Pounce cookie.) I had to brag a little right there…
Hope this helps you. Good luck.

For couches, I have provided a link to something that is very effective. But if they are concerned about a cat being on the furniture, there may be other issues that will arise, so ask lots of questions.
The second link has sizes for smaller furniture, but I have no experience with them.

If by going, you mean peeing, you need to spray pheromones that will discourage that behavior and clean it with Nature’s Miracle spray.
If you mean your roommates don’t want kitty lying on the furniture, then you should find new roomies. I had no problem with my kitty lying on my couch or my bed (soft furniture yes; tables, no). But it probably is too late. So get your kitty some perches designed for cats and put them in the main room and in your room. When kitty jumps on the couch where he isn’t supposed to be, move him to the perch.

You could try and cover everything in a cheap aluminum foil and imagine your self in a spaceship where everything is sterile or just lock him your up in your room. Let him out for exercise regulary.(maintanece) The last alternative is to give him up. Good luck. Life is filled with choices. Make the ones you can live with.
