What do I need for my home theatre subwoofer?

Posted by on August 12, 2010

I have a 100 rms to 3000 cap component subwoofer that I would like to use for a Home Theatre system. How would I power it?

THere are plenty car amps for it, however I can not find one single amp for it to use at home.

Also, how do i make it to where it can hook up into a surround sound system?

You can not use car speakers for home use. Car audio operate on a direct current and home audio on alternating current. You can burn out your speaker or power amplifier. Car audio are designed for small enclosed area, and Home audio are for large area. You can buy a subwoofer for your home audio and most of them only handle up to 100 watts, which is enough for most home use. Look for brands like: JBL, Infinity, Definitive Technology, Polk Audio and Klipsch to name a few. Hope this will help you out.

That’s because you’re not looking in the right place. Check out this site. They sell Surround Sound subwoofer amplifiers.

That is incorrect. Speakers are speakers and it doesn’t matter if they were designed for a car or home. The difference is how the amp gets power. Once the amp is powered the speaker will work just fine.
