What is retail merchandising and where can I find information for it?

Posted by on February 1, 2010

This is for a competitive event, any help or information regarding retail merchandising, and its principles would be greatly appreciated.

Retail merchandising usually refers to the point of puchase (POP) activities manufacturers and retailers perform. For example, Pepsi may have some special display racks in front of Supermarkets’ cashiers. The goal of retail merchandising is to make the "final sales pitch" to the shoppers to switch to your brand or to buy more if they’re buying already. To achieve this, you need to consider a lot of factors like coordination and consistency with other advertising and promotion campaigns, your competitors’ price promotion period, Retailers’ promotional allowance, etc.

Retail merchandising is getting one or more products presenting them to your customer, making the sale and also getting the shelf space to display the product and finally putting the product on the shelf and monitoring the sales and refilling the shelf again before shelf goes empty. That’s it in a nutshell the rest is up to you.
